Openings at About.com

Wednesday, March 12th, 2008

Since so many people seem to be interested in working with About.com, I thought I would post the occasional update on what topics are open. They are adding a LOT of brand new topics to the network, and all this growth means more opportunities for freelancers to get their foot in the door. Here are the latest additions to the list of topics (you can find the whole list on their site). (more…)

Writing for HubPages

Friday, February 1st, 2008

HubPages is what I call an “article aggregator“, meaning that articles are posted by anyone without any strict editorial guidelines or category structures. Anyone can post about anything, more or less. There are many out there, but I have had good successes with HubPages. Since they aren’t as well known as places like Associated Content, I thought I would take a moment to introduce you. (more…)

Writing for About.com

Article Aggregators - Yes or No?

Monday, October 1st, 2007

I don’t know if this is the proper term, but I call them “Article Aggregators”. Those sites that allow you to submit all/any articles that you write, but don’t really hire you to do so. Places that collect content pieces and then usually allow you to earn residual income from any ad revenue your material earns (usually through Google ads). Some sites do have a small token payment system in place, but as a Canadian, I am usually exempt and therefore have no personal experience with that.

They all claim that you can start earning money right away, and provide testimonials from those few lucky writers who have seen any income. Don’t get caught up in the hype. Though some money can be made, these are NOT great sources for online writing income.

Writing for Suite101

Friday, September 14th, 2007

Suite101 is an up-and-coming content network that offers a good opportunity to publish articles and earn money for your work. Their freelance hiring system is a little different than most, hence this article to explain it to you. I have worked for Suite101 for some time now, and do recommend them as a site to write for.

Writing for a Content Network

Friday, September 7th, 2007

A content network, as I use the term, refers to one of the many large sites that are broken down into topics/categories/channels or what have you. They maintain collections of articles and other content organized within these topics. About.com is a widely-known example of a content network.

Most (but not all) content networks hire on freelance writers to produce articles, based on a single topic. You are responsible for continually managing that one topic.
