When Working at Home, Be Prepared for the Unexpected

I haven’t been posting too much over the past couple of weeks, which creates the perfect example of what I’m talking about. When you’re at work, it’s a business environment and the interruptions are minimal and usually business related anyway. Not so when you work at home. Anything can happen and you have to be ready to roll with the punches, so to speak.

I haven’t gotten much work done for the past 3 weeks because life got in the way, and there was nothing I could do about it. If you want all the nasty details, my 3-year old got a case of head lice and was kept out of preschool until it was taken care of. So for 2 weeks, I lost my regularly scheduled work time and everything flew into a tizzy.

Thankfully, the infestation is over and all is well. The point is that when you work at home, no amount of details planning, organizing or scheduling can accommodate all the possible things than can happen and keep you from working. Just accept it and move on.

One way to guard against unexpected disruptions, is to stock-pile some work. Keep a few good articles on hand, for whatever topics or sites you write for. Something that can be used any time, at a moment’s notice. Then when life pulls you from your desk, you can compensate and not miss deadlines. Think of it as a little security blanket.

Try having five children like I do. I find it hard to write at times and other times, they are my inspiration for writing when they do those crazy little things. I completely understand what you were trying to say about writing at home.
