Don’t Become Obsessed with Finding Jobs

And yes, I’m writing this from personal experience. There are days when writer’s block is looming over the horizon, and my brain is looking for a way to not deal with it. Those days, I find myself poring over every category on Craiglist, and hitting every freelance job board I can find. And once I’ve checked all the usual places, I start wondering if something new has been posted in the past hour, and start the whole cycle over again. Next thing I know, the afternoon is gone.

Now, don’t get me wrong. Taking time to look for work is crucial to being a professional online writer. The problems start when you find yourself looking for work instead of doing work. Learn where to draw the line.

I’ve decided that I only check Craigslist twice a day (in the morning with my coffee and mid-afternoon). Same with my 2 favourite job boards. I only binge on work-hunting when I am truly free of other things to do. I suggest you try to limit your daily searching in somewhat the same manner.

Now, the reality may be that you are between jobs are really don’t have any writing that needs doing. That’s only an illusion. Even if no one has hired you on, write something anyway. Have some interesting articles stored away on any topic that interests you. You should never let yourself sit with nothing to do. Write something, write anything. But that’s another suggestion for another day.
